The Office of Information Technology works through strategic partnerships to help the campus fulfill a broad spectrum of campus-wide, enterprise initiatives. The OIT manages institutional IT planning, policy setting, security practice and compliance, prioritization and decision-making processes, and with the Office of Finance of Budget is responsible for campus IT investment planning and decisions. The OIT provides program office and project oversight capacity and consultation services. To that end, the OIT is involved in a variety of Campus Initiatives that have broad impact, including Student / Alumni Email Task Force, TIER (Technology Infrastructure for Education and Research), CCLE (Common Collaboration Learning Environment), DAT (Dossier Action Tracking) system and iTunes U.
The UCLA campus is moving ahead with an initiative to review options, analyze service and financial implications, and recommend a course of action with regard to outsourcing student and alumni email.
TIER (Technology Infrastructure for Education and Research) is a campus-wide initiative aimed at consolidating information technology to create "regions" that will reduce the complexity of infrastructure and management. In the past year, TIER has funded nine separate projects, which have implemented the Next Generation Network (NGN) design standards and requirements. The TIER program is also involved in development of the campus wireless plan, completing the NGN design, and completing the campus security model.
The UCLA Common Collaboration and Learning Environment (CCLE) is an institutional initiative to support education and research with a common digital environment for faculty and students. UCLA long experience in providing course web sites and has created a rich set of resources already offered within the schools and divisions and from central academic services. Almost all of the schools and divisions provide support and assistance for faculty and students in the use of learning systems.
iTunes U is a campus-wide project being accomplished in conjunction with Apple Computers. The project is part of Apples's free, hosted service for colleges and universities. Through iTunes U, Apple provides easy access to educational content 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There are now more than 812 individual UCLA-created podcasts for the public to view or subscribe to. Groups from 20 campus units are currently involved in the pilot.
The Dossier Action Tracking (DAT) system is a web-based database application that tracks the progress and status of all academic personnel actions through the academic review rpocess. The DAT team is working on several system enhancements, including providing the ability to include market adjustments, automation of range adjustment calculations, reworking the separation functionality, improving the work flow process by which candidates become employees and on the creation of a Mac-friendly faculty interface.
